ARLNH – Pets for Veterans Partnership With Chris’ Hero Pets

In 2021, the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire (ARLNH) proudly became the flagship shelter in partnership with Chris' Hero Pets, a program by the NH-based nonprofit Hero Pups. This collaboration aims to facilitate the adoption of shelter pets into loving homes with veterans through the Pets for Veterans initiative.

About Chris' Hero Pets

Chris' Hero Pets is a heartfelt tribute to Christopher Allen Journeau, born on 03/10/1987 and tragically lost on 06/22/2010. This program is driven by a profound purpose: to make companion animals more accessible to veterans, recognizing the profound impact these animals can have on their lives and the lives of their families.

The Vision

Jo-Ann Clark, a Gold Star mom and the driving force behind Chris' Hero Pets, shares her heartfelt vision: to raise awareness about PTSD, support veterans and their families, and prevent further loss of precious lives. The program stands as a testament to the transformative potential of the human-animal bond.

The Purpose

The core purpose of Chris' Hero Pets is rooted in compassion and understanding. By alleviating the financial burden of adoption fees for cats, dogs, and small animals, the program aims to provide companionship and support to veterans who may not be seeking a service dog but can benefit immensely from the presence of a furry companion.

How It Works

Through strategic partnerships with a network of shelters, Chris' Hero Pets covers the adoption fees for eligible veterans. This initiative not only honors the memory of Christopher Journeau but also serves as a beacon of hope for veterans struggling with PTSD and related challenges. ARLNH is proud to be a partner shelter to this impactful program.

If you are a veteran who is interested in taking part in the Chris' Hero Pet program, you can start your journey directly through the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire:

  1. View their adoptable animals to see descriptions for each of the animals currently available for adoption.
  2. If you see an animal you'd like more information on, please call their Animal Care & Adoption Team at (603) 472-3647.  A team member will contact you to discuss that animal and your needs.
  3. If it is a successful match, you'll be asked to show your military ID and given some paperwork to complete—and ARLNH will take it from there!

Join us as we continue to spotlight the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire throughout the month of April.
