Michael L. Briggs Memorial Scholarship
The Michael L. Briggs Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the sacrifice of a dedicated Manchester Police Department officer who was killed in the line of duty in October 2006.
Officer Michael Briggs was a lifelong defender of both his community and his country. After graduating from Pembroke Academy in 1990, Briggs served in the United States Marine Corps for four years. He later joined the Hillsborough County Department of Correction, serving as a correctional officer from 1995 to 2001 while also working as a part-time police officer in his hometown of Epsom, New Hampshire.
Briggs was sworn into the Manchester Police Department on May 2, 2001—his 30th birthday. During his time with MPD, he served the Queen City as a bicycle patrol officer and was known for his unwavering dedication to duty.

His heroism was recognized when he received the New Hampshire Hero Award in 2004 and the Congressional Law Enforcement Award in 2005 for helping 19 people escape a burning apartment building on July 25, 2004.
On the morning of October 16, 2006, Briggs was shot while responding to a reported domestic disturbance on Lake Avenue. He died of his injuries the following day.
We are honored to offer the Michael L. Briggs Memorial Scholarship to aspiring law enforcement professionals in recognition of Officer Briggs’s courage, service, and commitment to protecting the Manchester community.
