What Is A Credit Union?

Simply put, a credit union is a member-owned financial institution. Founded on the concept of "people helping people," credit unions bring together people with a common bond to help each other reach their financial goals.

Not For Profit

Credit unions are owned by their members, not a group of stock holders. When you join a credit union, you purchase a share of the credit union's stock. You become a stock holder in the credit union. At the end of the year, any profits that are made are given back to the membership in the form of higher dividends on savings, lower loan rates, and less fees than other financial institutions. Credit unions are overseen by a Board of Directors, which is made up of volunteers from the community.

Personal Attention and Quality Member Service

Because of the superior personal attention they give to members—and high quality service—credit unions consistently earn higher customer satisfaction ratings when you compare them to banks. In fact, credit unions have consistently ranked highest for service in a Gallup study commissioned by American Banker magazine.*
