Founding of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire

56 years ago, Emile Beaulieu took the initiative to establish the first BBBS chapter in New Hampshire, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester. Over time, more chapters emerged across the state, offering mentorship and support to youth in various communities. Nearly 12 years ago, all these chapters merged to form Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire.

Emile Beaulieu Jr. is a well-known figure in NH’s history, not just a community leader but also a two-term Mayor of Manchester during the 1980s. Despite facing financial struggles in his upbringing, including periods in an orphanage, Beaulieu worked hard, leaving school early to contribute to his family's income. He found employment at McElwain Shoes and later started his own business, Beaulieu Floor Coverings, Inc. Alongside his professional pursuits, he served in the New Hampshire National Guard.

Beaulieu's commitment to community service was evident through his involvement with organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester, which he founded and led. He also served on the boards of several other community-focused organizations.

Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire continues to carry out its mission of mentorship and support for young people across the state, honoring the legacy of Emile Beaulieu and his dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

We look forward to sharing more about Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire throughout the month of February.
