The Families in Transition (FIT) mission is to prevent and break the cycle of homelessness. The Manchester-based organization provides safe, affordable housing and comprehensive social services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. These programs and services are designed to ensure that people have the seamless support they need to find and maintain long-term stability.
In pursuit of their mission, FIT offers several services in the greater Manchester community:
- Emergency Shelter – Families in Transition operates two emergency homeless shelters in Manchester.
- Adult Emergency Shelter – serves up to 138 per night, three meals a day are cooked and served in the shelter kitchen, support services and case management are offered to help participants reach a positive outcome.
- Family Emergency Shelter – serves 11 families and offers support services and case management.
- Food Pantry – FIT’s Food Pantry offers a dignified shopping experience similar to a grocery store.
- Willows Substance Use Treatment Center

- Housing programs - Families in Transition provides housing options to meet people at every stage of their journey, whether they need affordable housing options, integrated supportive services, or other support through specialty housing or community options.

Families in Transition also works within the community to generate support and funding for their mission and services. 100% of the proceeds from Outfitters Thrift Store go directly to supporting the Families in Transition mission. Two annual events – Walk Against Hunger and the Families in Transition Annual Breakfast – raise awareness as well as funding for the organization. Members First has proudly supported these events and FIT’s mission for many years.
