CASA NH – Becoming an Advocate

This month we are spotlighting Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of New Hampshire. In our last blog post, we shared some of the stories of their wonderful volunteers and you may have wondered what it takes to become an advocate yourself.

CASA volunteers dedicate their time to forming meaningful relationships with the children they serve, gathering vital information from those involved in the child’s life, and making informed recommendations to the court. The ultimate goal is to help each child find a safe and permanent home. Advocates typically invest about 10-15 hours a month on their cases, with more time required in the initial stages.

Who Can Be a CASA Advocate?

Adults of all ages and from all walks of life can volunteer. All it takes is a commitment to help change a child’s future and some flexibility in your schedule.

Steps to Becoming an Advocate

  1. Attend an Information Session: Prospective volunteers can start by attending a virtual information session to understand the role better. This step is optional for those who feel ready to proceed.
  2. Submit an Application: Interested individuals must fill out an application form, marking the beginning of their journey to becoming a CASA advocate.
  3. Interview: An interview, currently conducted via Zoom, helps CASA NH and the applicant get to know each other better.
  4. Training: Volunteers undergo 40 hours of comprehensive pre-service training, which covers all aspects of the role and prepares them for the responsibilities ahead.
  5. Meet Your Program Manager: After training, each volunteer is paired with a Program Manager who provides ongoing support and guidance.
  6. Start Advocating: Once background checks are cleared, volunteers can begin their work, advocating for children and making a tangible difference in their lives.

From initial training to ongoing guidance from Program Managers, volunteers are well-equipped to handle their responsibilities.

Becoming a CASA advocate in New Hampshire is a deeply rewarding and life-changing commitment. It requires dedication, empathy, and a desire to make a real difference. By joining CASA NH, volunteers help rewrite the stories of children in need, providing them with hope and stability for the future.
