Mentorship That Changes Lives: Support Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire and Vermont and the Thankful Giving Campaign

Every young person deserves someone in their corner—a mentor who listens, encourages, and believes in them. That’s why this November and December, our Illuminating Change spotlight shines on Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire and Vermont (BBBS NH/VT).

Members First Credit Union is honored to celebrate their mission, share stories of mentorship in action, and invite you to join us in supporting the Thankful Giving Campaign.

It’s a gift to have had an adult who functioned as a mentor in your life: the teacher who pushed you to believe in yourself, the neighbor who took time to listen, or the coach who encouraged you to keep going after a tough loss. Those mentors helped shape who you became. For many children across New Hampshire and Vermont, that kind of encouragement can change the trajectory of their lives — and that’s exactly what Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) is all about.

Building Brighter Futures, One Match at a Time

Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire and Vermont creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Their approach is simple, yet profoundly effective: pair children (“Littles”) facing adversity with caring adult mentors (“Bigs”) who can provide guidance, friendship, and consistency. Each match is backed by professional staff who ensure safety, offer training and coaching, and stay in touch with families to support every step of the journey.

These relationships spark confidence, improve academic and social outcomes, and help young people see a future full of possibility.

Mentorship That Makes a Measurable Impact

BBBS NH/VT is the only evidence-based, one-to-one mentoring organization in the state. Every program — from mentoring children of incarcerated parents to supporting LGBTQ+ youth, children with disabilities, and those at risk of dropping out of school — is built on proven strategies that deliver lasting results.

Founded in Manchester in 1966, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire and Vermont now serves hundreds of children each year. Their mentors, staff, and supporters all share one goal: helping kids build brighter futures through connection, consistency, and care. And studies show they are making a clear difference.

  • 70% of Littles have plans to attend college
  • 77% of Littles say their decision making has improved
  • 90% of Littles have increased self-esteem

As an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America—one of the nation’s top-rated children’s nonprofits—BBBS NH/VT benefits from gold-standard youth protection training and a proprietary volunteer management system that helps ensure every match is safe, supported, and successful.

Real Stories. Real Impact.

Aurora and June have been matched for just over a year, and their bond continues to grow stronger each day. Through beach walks, building fairy houses, and participating in BBBS events, June has provided a space where Aurora feels safe and supported. Her mother has noticed remarkable changes in Aurora’s confidence and outlook—and a newfound joy in connecting with others.

John and Jay joined the program seeking connection—John, a positive male role model, and Jay, an opportunity to make a difference. In a short time, they’ve built a friendship rooted in curiosity, encouragement, and fun. From learning to ride a bike to setting sail on a Gundalow, each experience builds John’s confidence and sense of accomplishment. Jay says John’s determination and kindness inspire him, while John describes his time with Jay as simply “wonderful.”

These are just two of the hundreds of matches supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters across New Hampshire and Vermont, each one a powerful reminder that mentorship can transform lives.
