Manchester Police Athletic League (MPAL) – Programs with Impact

At the Manchester Police Athletic League (MPAL), programming is designed with one clear mission in mind: to provide Manchester youth with a safe, supportive space to grow and thrive. What makes MPAL truly unique is that all programs are 100% free, ensuring access for families regardless of their financial situation. MPAL is a valuable resource for parents and grandparents, and a trusted partner for young people in the community, connecting them with positive role models, including police officers, to foster mentorship and trust.

MPAL offers flexibility in its programs, allowing participants to join throughout the year and attend based on their availability. Prior to the pandemic, MPAL served over 600 youth annually. Although COVID-19 caused a temporary drop in numbers, enrollment has steadily increased, and MPAL remains committed to serving as many young people as possible.

Children ages 8 and up love MPAL's cooking class.

In response to feedback from families, MPAL has introduced new programs specifically geared toward younger children, including baton twirling, Kids Play/Gym, and Pokémon PALs. These programs address community needs and ensure MPAL is providing services that make a meaningful difference.

One standout program is MPAL’s Juvenile Court Diversion initiative, which boasts impressive outcomes such as a 93% completion rate and a recidivism success rate above traditional justice rates. This program provides a pathway for youth demonstrating behaviors that don’t rise to the level of arrest, offering them support and guidance to make better choices.

The impact of MPAL’s programs is best reflected in the voices of those who benefit from them. Layla, a homeschooler involved in the Boxing, Girls Empowerment & Movement, and Ambassador programs, says, “MPAL is my chance to meet new people. I love how every person here is so nice.” Zane, another participant, adds, “My favorite thing about MPAL is the people. I love how we all show up, come together, and have fun.”

Boxing is a popular activity amongst MPAL's youth!

For many youth, MPAL is more than just an after-school program. It’s a place to try new activities, step out of their comfort zones, and build lasting relationships. It’s a safe space where young people are empowered to be the best versions of themselves.
