CASA of NH: Everyday Advocates, Lifelong Impact

As part of our Illuminating Change initiative, Members First Credit Union spotlights a local nonprofit each month—organizations making a difference right here in our community. This is the third blog post highlighting our August 2025 nonprofit partner, CASA of NH. We’re honored to support their work advocating for vulnerable children across New Hampshire.

At CASA of New Hampshire, volunteers come from many walks of life—but each one shares a common mission: to be a steadfast voice for children during their most vulnerable moments. This week, we're highlighting a few of the remarkable CASA advocates whose unique journeys show the profound impact one person can make.

Dorothy Piquado - Global Educator Turned Advocate

After teaching across continents—including Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Iran, and Ecuador - for 37 years, Dorothy has found a new purpose in retirement: advocating for New Hampshire's most vulnerable children. Thirteen years into her CASA journey, she continues to serve up to the maximum case load and go above and beyond as a peer coordinator—supporting fellow volunteers and promoting the mission of CASA.
Her compassion, energy, and dedication are grounded in rich experience and a deep belief that every child deserves care and opportunity.

Thomas Monahan - Patience, Consistency, Results

Thomas remembers his first CASA case like a modern fairy tale—providing stability to three siblings, which led to reunification and healing. A father and “grandpa‑nanny,” he uses his compassion to build real bonds, demonstrating how small acts of care can yield life-changing outcomes.

Patty Tollner - Service with a Sidekick

With 12 years under her belt, Patty Tollner balances her CASA work alongside a dedicated companion—a trained therapy dog named Raisin. A former paralegal and board member, Patty emphasizes that you don’t need a specific background to make a difference at CASA. You just need empathy, commitment, and a willingness to speak up for children.
Her journey illustrates how CASA can uncover hidden strengths and build purpose for anyone ready to lend a hand.

Shawn Bailey - Building Permanency, One Case at a Time

Lakes Region real estate agent Shawn Bailey is a 17-year CASA veteran. Over that time, he has advocated for 24 children across 15 families, witnessing transformative moments like reunifications and adoptions come to life. He sees permanency not just as a legal outcome, but as the gift of stability and family to a child who needs it most.
For Shawn, CASA volunteer work fits seamlessly into his life, thanks to flexible scheduling and local support.

Jane Hoover - Educator with a Heart for Infants

Retired after 37 years as an educator, Jane found her perfect role in CASA—working closely with infants. She visits her case child monthly, fostering trust and providing stability during the most critical early months of life.
