The PLUS Company is a nonprofit organization that serves over four hundred adults with disabilities in Southern New Hampshire and the Greater Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts.
Their mission is to empower adults with disabilities to maximize their independence through customized support and services. This includes educational classes, vocational training, daily living support, on-the-job support, and full residential programming.
Their goal is to allow their clients to learn the skills necessary to become full, productive members of their communities.
History:
Established in 1972, The PLUS (People Learning Useful Skills) Company obtained non-profit status in 1978. In 1981, a court order mandated the de-institutionalization of Laconia State School residents, sparking a surge in the demand for community-based services for those with developmental disabilities. This pivotal moment fueled The PLUS Company's rapid expansion.
The Greater Nashua area witnessed the establishment of several group homes, each prioritizing vocational training and skill development. Over time, The PLUS Company has consistently grown, adapting its programming to meet the evolving needs of individuals with disabilities and their communities. Expanding into Massachusetts in 1988 marked a significant milestone.
In 2005, The PLUS Company's Progress Center opened, facilitating increased access to Adult Education classes and enrichment programs. In 2010, the acquisition of 19 Chestnut Street in Nashua provided additional opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the area.
Throughout its journey, The PLUS Company's goals have evolved to enhance options for vocational, social, and financial independence, promoting integration for adults with disabilities. Today, the focus has shifted to inclusive employment opportunities within the community, with a move towards individually supported home environments replacing group homes. This shift has resulted in remarkable improvements in the lives of those served.
A highpoint of this remarkable journey was celebrated in 2022 as The PLUS Company marked its 50th anniversary.
