Creating a Good Life: The Power of Person-Centered Services at The Moore Center

When you hear the phrase “Creating Opportunities for a Good Life,” it’s more than a tagline—it’s a philosophy that drives every service and interaction at The Moore Center. That mission is grounded in one central idea: person-centered care.

But what does that really mean?

🌱 More Than a Program—It’s a Partnership

At The Moore Center, person-centered care starts with a simple but powerful belief: every individual should have the chance to define what a good life looks like for them.

Rather than focusing solely on what a person “needs,” The Moore Center takes the time to understand each person’s goals, preferences, and unique strengths. Staff work collaboratively with clients and families to create customized support plans that promote independence, community engagement, and long-term fulfillment.

Whether it’s choosing a job path, developing life skills, or pursuing new hobbies, the individual is always at the center of the conversation.

“It’s about working with someone, not doing for them,” says one Moore Center team member. “We support their goals—not our idea of what those goals should be.”

🏡 Real Independence, Real Results

For many individuals with developmental disabilities or acquired brain disorders, independence doesn’t mean being on their own—it means having the right support at the right time. That could look like:

  • A job coach helping someone succeed at work
  • A staff member assisting with grocery shopping or budgeting
  • Peer-based programs that promote social connections
  • Housing support that allows individuals to live safely in their own apartments

This flexible, respectful approach makes all the difference—because when people feel heard, supported, and empowered, they thrive.

🎯 Why Person-Centered Care Matters

Compared to one-size-fits-all services, person-centered care:

  • Builds stronger relationships between individuals, families, and staff
  • Promotes self-advocacy and decision-making
  • Encourages lifelong learning, growth, and fulfillment
  • Respects the dignity, culture, and identity of every person served

These outcomes don’t just improve quality of life—they reflect The Moore Center’s core values of honesty, integrity, respect, and inclusion.

🌟 Kate's Story: A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment

A shining example of person-centered care is Kaitlyn Duhaime. In 2013, Kate suffered an anoxic brain injury that left her in a coma and facing a daunting recovery. With determination and the support of her family and The Moore Center, she relearned essential life skills, pursued her education, and achieved her goal of becoming a Lead Teacher at a childcare center.

Kate's journey didn't stop there. She gained independence by moving into her own apartment and became an advocate for others with brain injuries. Her participation in events like the Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire's fundraising walk and the Miss Amazing pageant, where she was crowned the 2020 NH Sr. Miss Queen, showcases her commitment to inspiring others.

Kate's story exemplifies how person-centered care empowers individuals to overcome challenges and lead fulfilling lives.
